Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have my piano tuned?
Most manufacturers recommend tuning at least twice a year. For new pianos, more frequent tuning may be needed as the strings settle. Regular tuning maintains pitch, sound quality, and long-term structural health.
Why does my piano go out of tune?
Pianos are affected by changes in temperature and humidity, which cause the wooden soundboard and metal strings to expand or contract. Even without playing, environmental fluctuations can detune a piano.
How long does a tuning take?
A standard tuning takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on the piano’s condition. If additional pitch adjustments are needed, the appointment may take longer.
What is a pitch adjustment, and do I need one?
If your piano hasn’t been tuned in a long time, it may have drifted significantly above or below standard pitch (A440). A pitch adjustment is a preliminary tuning step to bring the piano close enough to proper pitch before fine tuning. We’ll assess this at the start of the appointment.
Do you tune by ear or use electronic tools?
We use a combination of traditional aural techniques and high-precision electronic tuning software.
My piano hasn’t been tuned in years—is it still tunable?
In most cases, yes. However, older pianos may have structural or mechanical issues. We’ll inspect the piano at the beginning of the appointment and let you know what’s possible, or if repairs are recommended.
Should I tune my piano even if I rarely play it?
Yes. Regular tuning helps preserve the value and integrity of your instrument. Waiting too long can result in the need for costly pitch corrections or repairs later on.
What should I do before my appointment?
Please clear any objects off the piano and ensure a quiet environment so we can hear the tuning clearly. Pets and children should be supervised during the session if they’re nearby.
How much does a tuning cost?
Pricing varies depending on your piano’s condition and needs. A typical tuning ranges from $150–$175, with additional fees for pitch adjustments.
